Dental Implants & Dental Implant Restoration
Implant restoration is an innovative way to replace missing teeth with permanent crowns that look and function exactly like your own natural teeth. The crowns, which we can make in our own office with the CEREC system, are attached to titanium posts that are surgically implanted for the very best functionality.
While missing teeth are often thought of as a cosmetic issue only related to your mouth, the truth is that missing teeth can affect the entire body. Depending on how many teeth you are missing, you may suffer from malnutrition since missing teeth often cause discomfort when eating fresh, nutritious foods. Missing teeth also cause wear and tear on your remaining teeth, which could lead to tooth pain, erosion, and decay. Eventually, you may lose more teeth. If your self-esteem is suffering because of your missing teeth, you may even develop depression.
Dental implants can alleviate many of these concerns. If you are missing more than one or two teeth, you may wish to consider a bridge that is held in place with dental implants. This prevents the need to alter otherwise healthy teeth to create the necessary abutments.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
While most healthy adults are eligible for dental implants, the best way to determine whether implants are right for you is to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Maher at our Walnut Creek dental office. Dr. Maher will examine your teeth and gums and will also take x-rays to determine the condition of the bone in your jaws. Because dental implants require the post to be implanted directly into your jaw, it’s important for the bone in your jaw to be healthy and for you to have a significant quantity. This is also why it’s important to take care of missing teeth promptly. Over time, missing teeth can cause the tissue in the area – including the jaw bone – to atrophy and become diminished. If your jaw bone has started to atrophy, we can consider bone and tissue grafts, and Dr. Maher will discuss these options with you.
The Dental Implant Process
Once you and Dr. Maher have determined that dental implants are right with you, you will be referred to a skilled oral surgeon to have the titanium post implanted. Titanium is a bio-compatible metal, which allows it to eventually become a part of your jaw without the risk of sensitivity or rejection. After your gums and jaw have healed from the surgery, it will be time to return to our office to have your restoration made and attached to the post.
At our office, we use the CEREC system to create beautiful, natural-looking crowns that are perfectly customized to match your own natural teeth and are ready the same day. Dr. Maher will work with you using pictures and photographs to design a crown that will blend in flawlessly with your own natural teeth and then create the crown using a special type of computer. When the crown is ready, he will attach it to your post, and your dental implant restoration will be complete and your teeth will be restored to their full functionality.
