What can I do to prevent periodontal disease?

The most important thing you can do prevent periodontal disease is to follow the brushing and flossing routine recommended by Dr. Maher and your dental hygienist. Regular, twice yearly examinations and professional cleanings are also incredibly important. While some factors for periodontal disease like genetics, age, and gender are out of your control, you can follow these tips for significantly reducing your chances of developing this condition:

  • If you smoke, quit. Let Dr. Maher know if you need assistance with this.
  • Eat a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables to keep your immune system working well and dairy to keep your bones strong and healthy.
  • If you have diabetes or heart disease, work with your general practitioner to keep these conditions under control.
  • When you brush your teeth, make sure to brush your tongue as well to remove the most bacteria possible.
  • Use an antimicrobial mouthwash recommended by Dr. Maher.
  • Avoid sweet and sticky foods that can settle into the natural grooves and crevices of your teeth and are difficult to remove with brushing.
  • Ask Dr. Maher if an electric toothbrush is right for you.
  • Avoid snacking right before bed -- especially if you've already brushed and flossed!
