What is a deep cleaning?
Treat Gum Disease
Deep cleaning, also known as periodontal therapy or root planing and scaling, is a procedure used to treat periodontal disease. When you have periodontal disease, pockets form in your gums, and bacteria are able to collect beneath the gum line. These bacteria can do significant damage to your teeth and roots and can eventually erode your teeth. Scaling is the process of removing the tartar that has collected beneath the gum line. Root planing smooths out the surfaces of your roots so the bacteria don't have anything to cling to. If your tooth structure is infected, root planing will also remove the infected portion of the tooth.
Current dental techniques and technology have turned root scaling and planing into a practically painless procedure. If Dr. Maher has recommended deep cleaning for you and you have any concerns, please let us know so that we can help you be more comfortable.
